Washington Street
Chairs: Vernelle Boykin, Kathy Esslinger, Lisa Fisher
Volunteers: 25
Look for us around town. We’re the ones who fill the brick planters, adorn the doors, and refresh the gardens along Washington Street.
Drive a bit slower or take a stroll to enjoy the evergreens, perennials, bulbs, and annuals that flank this historic street.
Doors and More
We also adorn doors and install and maintain the planters and gardens around the Haymarket Museum and Town Hall.
Community Hall Garden Entry
A charming perennial garden flanks the Community Hall behind the Evergreen Fire Station 15. Members meet quarterly to plant and maintain gardens. The beautiful plantings include bulbs, perennials, annuals, and fruit and ornamental trees. We keep the planters festooned with seasonal flowers.
We are proud to present donations to The
following worthy organizations
Supporting our community and environment is an essential element of our Club. While gardening skills are an obvious sign of support, our patronage extends even further. We donate to educational and environmental organizations, plus foundations that support our neighbors.
Aluminum Cans for Burned Children
Aluminum Cans for Burned Children (ACBC) is a not-for-profit program founded in 1985. The goal of the program is to help keep children from being burned and to help children who have been burned get well. ACBC services are funded through aluminum can recycling proceeds. We at HGBA, collect aluminum cans to help support The Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue ACBC program efforts. The collected cans are recycled at Potomac Metals in Manassas and the money raised from the recycling the cans goes to help local children who are burn survivors.
Haymarket Regional Food Pantry
The Pantry feeds thousands of people every year, which means they always need more food to stock their shelves. We offer seasonal suggestions for food to bring to our meetings and deliver it directly to the pantry. The Pantry has provided food to over a half a million individuals since their inception 20 years ago. In 2024, they refined their service area to ensure they remain sustainable for many more years to come. In addition to food, we collect cash donations.

Plant-a-tree program | US FOREST SERVICE | formerly penny pines
Volunteers: 50
Reforestation, whether by planning for natural regeneration or tree planting, allows for the accelerated development of forested ecosystems following natural disturbance events such as wildfire, wind events, and insect and disease infestations, or planned timber harvest.
This silvicultural treatment helps to develop forest structure and species composition to provide for wildlife habitat, clean and abundant water, forest wood products, recreation opportunities, soil stabilization, and so much more. Reforestation presents unique opportunities to address emerging issues associated with climate change by conserving and managing tree genetic diversity and sequestering carbon to counter greenhouse gas emissions.
GRO PRESCHOOL
Chairperson: Alexandra Elswick
Gro is a nature-based preschool for children 3-5 years old inside James S. Long Park in Haymarket. At Gro, kindergarten children are taught in a more natural way, utilizing both indoor and outdoor classrooms, taking advantage of the park’s four miles of hiking trails, small creek, forest, and native wildlife.
Our club has been asked to lead a monthly program for the students at GRO, a nature-based preschool. Each month, we read a themed story and follow up with a fun garden activity.
